PORTLAND, Mich. — Rising river levels along the Grand River at Portland are causing flooding to nearby streets and low-lying areas adjacent to the river.
An ice jam formed Friday evening, creating fluctuating water levels and resulting flooding.
Portland City Manager Tutt Gorman posted on Facebook Friday night that Water Street and Canal Street near the river are closed due to the water spilling over.
The National Weather Service of Grand Rapids has issued a Flood Warning for the Grand River at Portland until Wednesday evening.
The river is expected to rise above flood stage on Saturday, cresting at 12.5 feet by Monday morning before falling below flood stage by Wednesday morning. For perspective, flood stage is 12 feet at this section of the river.
Elsewhere, a Flood Watch will be in effect for the Grand River at Comstock Park from Sunday evening until further notice.
Rising water levels at this portion of the Grand River have the potential to reach flood stage by Sunday evening. If this were to occur, minor flooding along Abrigador Trail would be expected.
Ice jams occur when ice blocks the flow of a river, leading to flooding. These typically occur in the same locations every year when thawing occurs during the winter and/or spring.
