Could the remnants of Hurricane Beryl arrive in West Michigan?

The remnants of Hurricane Beryl could bring heavy soaking rain to portions of southern Michigan.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Hurricane Beryl made landfall Monday morning as a Category 1 Hurricane with 80 mph sustained winds and storm surge surpassing 6 feet. Beryl has already impacted several Caribbean islands, including Jamaica and Grenada, at Category 5 strength.

Hurricane Beryl is a beast of a storm and has broken multiple records in the Atlantic!

  1. Earliest Category 4/5: Beryl is the earliest Category 4 and Category 5 hurricane on record in the Atlantic.
  2. Southernmost Category 4/5: It is the southernmost Category 4 and Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic.
  3. Rapid Intensification: Beryl experienced the fastest intensification before September, skyrocketing from Category 1 to Category 4.

After it hits Texas, West Michigan could see the weakened impacts from Beryl overnight Tuesday throughout Wednesday. Now there still is a large amount of uncertainty surrounding exactly how much we will be impacted by this extratropical storm.

Models are having a hard time agreeing on the track of the low-pressure system itself and the heaviest rain will surround that low pressure—meaning what track the storms take will highly depict who gets the brunt of the tropical impacts.

Right now, the Storm Prediction Center has most of the low peninsula under a slight risk for excessive rainfall Tuesday night into Wednesday. This could mean a possible flooding risk within those areas.

You'll notice though that the risk is rather expansive and this is in large part due to the uncertainty between models. Below you will see some of the different model outputs on rainfall totals through 10 p.m. Wednesday ranging from 0.20 inches to 3.00 inches.

So, overall it is very likely that we see rainfall in West Michigan Tuesday night through Wednesday. We will continue to closely monitor just how much rain over the coming days.
