Severe Storms Strike West Michigan

Thunderstorms cause damage and create flooding Wednesday evening.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Wednesday began the day with promise:  sunshine, mild temperatures and comfortable humidity.  That would rapidly change during the afternoon into the evening.

Thunderstorms erupted in NE Illinois spawning several tornadoes in the suburbs of Chicago and then crossed Lake Michigan into Lower Michigan early in the evening.

The storm tracks showed where the higher rotation occurred from late afternoon through early evening.

Numerous severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were issued as the storms threatened parts of Van Buren, Allegan, Kalamazoo, Barry and Ionia counties between 8:45 pm and midnight.

As of midnight, wind damage was reported in a number of locations with more reports likely once daylight arrives Thursday.
