NWS survey finds evidence of 60+ mph winds in Van Buren County

NWS Grand Rapids has a team working in the Hartford and Lawrence area of Van Buren County along I-94. The team hasn't found conclusive evidence of a tornado.

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Michigan — The National Weather Service Grand Rapids has a team working in the Hartford and Lawrence area of Van Buren County along I-94. They're checking minor damage from storms Wednesday evening, and want to determine if a tornado is to blame. 

An NWS Meteorologist says they've found nothing conclusive in terms of a tornado in Van Buren County. They did find evidence of 60+ mph winds. 

Thunderstorms erupted in NE Illinois, spawning several tornadoes in the suburbs of Chicago, and then crossed Lake Michigan into lower Michigan early in the evening.

Numerous severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were issued as the storms threatened parts of Van Buren, Allegan, Kalamazoo, Barry and Ionia counties between 8:45 p.m. and midnight Wednesday.

As the sun rose Thursday, we're starting to get more reports of storm damage. 

13 ON YOUR SIDE also spotted what appears to be storm damage in Colon, Michigan at a storage facility. 

Mill Race Storage's roof was ripped off overnight during the tornado warning and shows signs of other damage. 

The National Weather Service from northern Indiana is on the way to assess the damage in Colon and determine if it was caused by a tornado.

Heavy downpours led to flooding rainfall with radar-estimated totals near 4''.

Some of the observed rainfall totals ranged from 2-4+''.
