The National Weather Service confirmed that three tornadoes touched down in lower Michigan on Saturday night.
In West Michigan, an EF-0 tornado hit Little Long Lake in Barry County on Saturday evening and another one touched down near Morley in Mecosta County. NWS has not yet determined an EF-scale rating for the latter tornado.
The one in Barry County lasted about two minutes, from 7:08 p.m. to 7:10 p.m. and it reached 75 mph. There were no injuries or deaths reported as a result of that tornado.
The tornado near Morley caused heavy damage to the area near Washington Road and 137th Avenue. A Deerfield Township man's trailer was destroyed—the frame traveled just over 700 feet from where it stood into the middle of a nearby road.
"Everything is gone," said Larry Mero, who was walking his dog when the tornado touched down. "I don't know which direction. I mean this [trailer] got cleaned off. Everything just left."
The Red Cross disaster relief team brought food and water for volunteers clearing debris from Mero's yard and next door at Kranz Farms, where the tornado destroyed multiple buildings and scores of trees. NWS says they plan to assign an EF-rating to this tornado on Monday.
The tornado is a reminder not to take tornado warnings or severe thunderstorm warnings lightly, said Mecosta County Emergency Management Coordinator Scott Schroeder.
"A lot of times meteorologists on your station and others say, 'If you're in a mobile home, now's the time to seek shelter,'" Schroeder said. "This is a good example of why you do that."
Another was confirmed near Jackson. It was an EF-0 with winds that were around 65 mph but briefly hit 80 mph.
On Saturday evening, there were tornado warnings issued for Barry, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Mecosta Counties.
In total, there have been five confirmed tornadoes that hit lower Michigan this week. NWS said that two tornadoes hit Lake County on Aug. 28.
