Strong Thunderstorms bring Major Flooding to West Michigan

A 13 Weather Impact Alert has been triggered for portions of West Michigan as thunderstorms cause roads to become unpassable due to flood waters.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Flood Warning is in effect until 8:30 a.m. Monday morning as strong thunderstorms containing heavy rainfall impact West Michigan.

WHAT

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues as 2 to 4+ inches of rainfall fell overnight. Rainfall will taper off by 7 a.m. with additional strong to severe storms expected Monday night. With that, a Flood Warning remains in effect until 8:30 a.m. for portions of Southwest Michigan, including Kent County.

No additional details have been given as to when flood waters will recede.

IMPACTS

Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations has caused several roads to close. The highest impacts seem to be found at 28th and Division, where roads are not passable Monday morning. 

Other areas that could be experiencing flooding include Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Kentwood, Walker, Grandville, East Grand Rapids, Comstock Park and Northview.

Watch for rapidly rising water, and call 911 for life-threatening conditions. If submerged in water, do not wait to evacuate. You should seek higher ground immediately. Never drive through standing water. The water can be deeper than expected, and roads can be broken down.
