MICHIGAN, USA — It might be the last time you'll get to break out the swimsuit this summer, West Michigan. Water temperatures are on the rise amid a heat wave in the area.
Tuesday is the peak of West Michigan's heat, with temperatures climbing as high as the lower to middle 90s. The only exception will be the immediate lakeshore, where the upper 80s are expected for high temperatures. There’ll be no escaping the humidity as dew points soar into the lower to middle 70s.
This degree of humidity is tropical to oppressive by West Michigan standards.
Heat indices—combining the air temperature and humidity—will be more than 100° for several hours this afternoon into the early evening, potentially upwards of 105°.
But it's not all bad news for the Mitten State. Lake Michigan could be the perfect cool-down temperature for a swim.
Water temperatures have rebounded after an upwelling event last week. The temperatures, as of Tuesday morning, are mostly in the upper 60s to lower 70s, which is near average at this point of summer.
These temperatures are a stark contrast to last week, when numerous beaches reported temperatures in the 40s and 50s. Back and forth water temperatures will be common through the end of summer.
Waves will be in the 1-2’ range Tuesday through Thursday generally, leading to a lower swim risk. It’s to be noted that periodic thunderstorm activity may result in fast changing conditions along the lakeshore, meaning caution should be used if heading into the water.
