GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Road conditions continue to be poor as a winter storm warning remains in effect through Friday afternoon.
A winter storm warning is in effect for Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Kalamazoo, Allegan, Barry, Van Buren, Newaygo, Oceana, Mason and Lake counties until 4 p.m. A winter weather advisory is in effect for the remainder of West Michigan until the same time.
The 13 On Target Weather team is predicting several more inches of lake effect snow today, combined with gusting winds. Total storm accumulation will be 6-12 inches of snow with some locally higher amounts along the lakeshore.

Local law enforcement is asking all motorists to dramatically reduce speeds and be vigilant for hazardous and sudden changing road conditions. Authorities have already responded to numerous crashes, including an accident on Interstate 96 near Coopersville where a semi truck slid off the road.
Because of the very low temperatures, salt is not effective at keeping the ice melted. Even if the road appears clear of snow or wet, it may be covered in ice. Authorities add road conditions can change suddenly and dramatically due to gusting wind and drifting in open areas. Visibility will decrease throughout the day.
Below is a forecast discussion from the National Weather Service:
Hazardous weather:
- Snow showers. An additional 1 to 4 inches Friday.
- Storm total snowfall 8 to 12 inches by Friday afternoon with locally higher amounts up to a foot and a half.
- Wind gusts to 35 mph causing blowing and drifting snow.
- Significantly reduced visibilities in snow and blowing snow.
- Wind chills around 10 below.
Impacts:
- Dangerous travel conditions with some roads impassable or closed.
- Dangerous to be trapped outdoors; 30 minutes to freeze exposed skin.
- Isolated power outages.
Precautionary/preparedness actions:
- Avoid travel if possible.
