GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Winter weather is headed towards West Michigan from the southwest in the coming hours. By 10 a.m. we should expect light snow/sleet that will intensify throughout the afternoon and evening hours. This system will come to an end by 10 p.m. tonight. Conditions will likely be the worst during the evening commute timeframe.
Depending on your location, precipitation type will vary. Those near and north of I-96 will mainly see snowfall. 4 to 6 inches should be expected for those areas by the end of the day today. As for those south of I-96, 2+ inches of snow is expected with a glaze of ice due to sleet mixing in with the snow.
Because of these conditions, the National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisories for the entire region until 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Temperatures are expected to fall throughout the afternoon hours due to strengthening northeasterly winds. Because of this, roads will become increasingly slick and congested. Other concerns include periods of reduced visibility and snow accumulation.
Temperatures remain below freezing Thursday night through Friday night, allowing some of this to stick to the ground. Although, it will be shortlived as we climb back into the upper 30s Saturday and mid-40s by Sunday.
