GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The first in a series of winter storms this week will be affecting West Michigan on Tuesday and Wednesday. This round will feature snow, wind and in some areas, rain, affecting travel throughout the region.
STORM TRACK
The track of the storm has remained fairly steady since last week according to the Euro model, tracking through Lower Michigan roughly along a line from Benton Harbor to Saginaw. Mainly snow is expected NW of the track with snow changing to rain, then returning to snow SE of the track. Wind is expected to be strongest as the low-pressure system departs later Tuesday into Wednesday.
IMPACTS
The heavy, wet snow will have the highest impact on travel, especially the morning commute on Tuesday. Ice buildup is not expected as temperatures are expected to be around or above freezing. Visibility will have medium impacts on travel, while this snow is expected to have low impacts on potential power outages.
SNOWFALL
The Euro model shows higher snowfall amounts NW of the projected storm track with lower amounts SE due to the changeover to rain for about eight hours.
Several more rounds of winter weather are expected from mid-week through the weekend and even into next week. Stay weather-aware and return often to get refinements to timing and amounts of snowfall expected over the next week or two.
