It's time for chili! Nearly 20 year old chili cook off in Grand Haven

Grand Haven is the place to be this weekend to sample some of the best chili around.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Cool temperatures mean it's time to cook up big pots of chili! 

On February 8, the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post 28 Grand Haven is hosting their 19th Annual Chili Cook Off. 

Contestants will compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. 

Raffle prizes include a 1-night "stay-cation" at Harbor House Grand Haven. Includes dinner at Snug Harbor Grand Haven and breakfast at Deelite Grand Haven. Two-night stay at Looking Glass Bed & Breakfast Grand Haven. Includes dinner at JW's Grand Haven. 

Another big raffle prize is a four-hour charter fishing trip for four people compliments of Whitney Charter Grand Haven.

Game Day Chili
Ingredients:

  •  1 lb of lean ground beef
  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 tsp each of Worcestershire sauce, ground cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, and brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp Ancho Chili powder (to taste)
  • 2 cans of kidney beans
  • 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz can of tomato paste

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil, brown ground beef
  2. Add onion and garlic. Cook until onion is clear
  3. Add all remaining ingredients except kidney beans
  4. Lower heat to simmer
  5. Simmer one-hour covered
  6. Add kidney beans
  7. Cook one-hour uncovered

The chili cook off starts at noon and is open to the public. It is a 21+ event. The legion is located at 700 S. Harbor Drive in Grand Haven. Find more information about it at americanlegiongh.org.
