Make your own Christmas pickle

See how to create a Christmas pickle to hang on your tree.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — You don't have to spend a lot to make great ornaments for your tree.

Catherine Behrendt shows the My West Michigan how to create their very own Christmas pickle ornaments.

Christmas pickles are thought to be a German tradition. It was started back in the 1880s when Woolworth stores started selling glass ornaments imported from Germany. They ornaments were all shapes and sizes of various fruits and vegetables, and among the bunch were pickles. There are a number of different myths as to why they became popular, but none have truly stuck. All we know, is the funky pickle tree ornaments are popular and often fun to make.

Catherine shared two ways to make the ornaments. She found a felt pickle pattern on www.wonderstrange.com (you can also get the full directions there).

Catherine also found a smooth paper mache DIY project on www. ultimatepapermache.com (see the full directions on their site). If you wanted to go that route, you would just make the shape of a pickle, let it dry and paint and decorate as you like.
