GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Getting organized isn't easy and it's even harder for our seniors -- especially if they live alone.
Professional Organizer Kate Wert with Moxie Life Organizing has teamed up with Kent County Senior Millage to create a program that helps low income seniors in Kent County who in need of organizing help.
Some might say what would there be to organize for seniors? But the truth is things can pile up. Having clutter and loose items in a living space could lead to trips, slips and falls -- which could be detrimental to an older adult.
Kate joined My West Michigan Wednesday with tips on what you can do for an older adult in your life to help them organize their belongings and home.
Here are 7 tips for organizing an older adult's home:
- Raise stored items to waist height. Do not store anything lower than upper thigh height.
- Clear clutter from steps and add lights to dark areas, like stairways.
- Hang baskets and other organization items near the stars, so there is a place where items that need to go upstairs can be stored.
- Purchasing a small rolling cart for the kitchen can help move items around without carrying it.
- Get as much of the floors and stairs as possible to reduce trip or fall risks.
- Put all important documents, like bills, passports, life insurance, will, power of attorney, and social security cards in one, secure place that can be locked.
- Keep a recent copy of medication list posted on the refrigerator for easy and quick access.
Seniors who qualify can get free or reduced priced risk help from Moxie Life Organizing with a number of organizing needs through the Kent County Senior Millage and the Area Agency on Aging of West Michigan.
