GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — A triathlon is composed of three disciplines: swimming, biking and running. All require gear, but what do you really need and what is optional? Kari Stuart has the answers.

SWIMMING - The only gear necessary for the swim is something to swim in! The Grand Rapids Triathlon provides a swim cap with colors dictating what swim round a participant is in. A wet suit is not required, but will be helpful given the cool water temperature.
BIKING - Of course, a bike is necessary for this leg of the race! Participants can use either a road bike or mountain bike. A helmet is required, too. A water bottle is good to have on hand, as the bike race is the best time to hydrate. Bike computers and triathlon shorts are unnecessary but helpful to have.
RUNNING- Not much gear is required for the run, but a vital piece of equipment are your running shoes. Now is a good time to replace older shoes and work in a new pair before race day. A bib belt is also required, but a hat/visor, sunglasses and running singlets are not.
