GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — The man accused of killing two people in the Burton Heights neighborhood in Grand Rapids appeared in court Tuesday morning.

Casey Harmon Jr., 19, is facing two counts of open murder and two counts of felony firearm in connection to the shooting deaths of Anayia Rodriguez and Malik Eubanks that happened on Nov. 7, 2023.

Harmon Jr.'s hearing was adjourned, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Nov. 27.

Back on that November day, three people were killed in the Burton Heights neighborhood, and a toddler was found wandering the streets nearby.

A 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were found bloodied in the street in two separate areas just blocks from one another.

The man's toddler was alone about a mile away from the crime scene, covered in blood. The boy wasn't hurt himself, but detectives believe the boy more than likely witnessed the crime.

On that same day, just hours after Malik and Anayia's bodies were found and just five or six doors down from the original crime scene, a 32-year-old man was shot and killed.

It's not yet clear if the young couple's slaying and the shooting hours later are connected.

Grand Rapids Police said all three died from gun violence, and the medical examiner ruled their deaths homicides.

GRPD said the death investigation into the third man, Darryl Yarber, continues, and they don't have any additional details to share.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated Casey Harmon Jr. waived his right to a preliminary hearing and was headed to trial.
