GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids father won't serve any additional jail time, a Judge ruled Thursday.
Jaquon Tucker was sentenced to time served of 284 days in jail on Thursday after his 9-year-old son brought a gun to his elementary school in May of 2023.
A classmate of Tucker's son alerted staff that the boy had a gun and staff members were able to confiscate the weapon without incident.
13 ON YOUR SIDE acquired court documents after the incident, which revealed that the boy had allegedly planned to shoot another student.
Tucker was charged with Felony Firearm and Child Abuse in the 4th degree in connection to the incident.
He was arrested on June 9, 2023, after an hours-long standoff with police.
In court on Thursday the judge brought up Tucker's previous criminal record, saying he has four prior felonies, six prior misdemeanors and a juvenile court record.
Due to his criminal record, Tucker was legally not allowed to have a weapon. The gun his son had brought to school was a stolen weapon, law enforcement said.
"Do you realize how serious this is, and this seems to be going on all over the state," said the judge to Tucker on Thursday. "For some reason, young children are getting guns. They're shooting themselves, they're shooting other people. Luckily, no one was seriously injured or hurt."
The judge went on to say Tucker should not have had a gun, let alone a loaded gun that his child was able to get a hold of.
"There's just no excuse or justification for this," the judge said.
Tucker was credited with time served of 284 days since he has been serving time since his initial arrest. He was also fined $500 on top of court fees.
