Kent County detective injured when wanted suspect rams parked cars to escape arrest

The wanted 34-year-old Grand Rapids man escaped arrest temporarily. A tactical team found him hiding in an apartment attic space.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A Kent County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant who was struck by a car during an attempted arrest Wednesday night is now recovering a home.

The Sheriff's Office said around 6:30 p.m., the KCSO was working with the Metro Pattern Crimes Task Force to arrest a wanted suspect.

The wanted 34-year-old Grand Rapids man was parked along Eastern Avenue and 32nd Street, and law enforcement surrounded him.

Authorities said the suspect's black BMW SUV started ramming several parked cars to escape, and ended up hitting a parked car that struck a Kent County Detective.

The 21-year veteran of the force, a Detective Lieutenant, was knocked to the ground. He was taken to a local hospital to get checked out, and was discharged overnight.

The suspect got away, and authorities later found the abandoned BMW in Grand Rapids.

Detectives learned the suspect was at an apartment in the 1000 block of Woodfield East in Gaines Township.

Once the tactical team made it there, they got a warrant to go inside.

Authorities learned the man was hiding in an attic.

After an hour of negotiating, the suspect came out of the attic and the apartment where he was taken into custody.

Law enforcement said they recovered two handguns, a Glock switch and marijuana.

He's now expected to face charges related to fleeing police in addition to firearms and drug charges.

The Michigan State Police will handle the crash investigation involving the detective.
