Man sentenced for hitting, killing 60-year-old Greenville man

GREENVILLE, Mich. — Charles Weston Hatinger, 70 of Lakeview, learned his sentence today after hitting and killing a Greenville man in August.

Brian Wellman, a 60-year-old Greenville man, was crossing North Lafayette Street near Grove Street when he was hit by a car. He later died from his injuries.

Hatinger was charged with one count of operating under the influence causing death and one count of operating under the influence causing incapacitating injury. Hatinger pleaded no contest to the operating under the influence causing incapacitating injury charge and the operating under the influence causing death charge was dismissed.

Judge Ronald Schafer sentenced him to a minimum of 11 months in the Montcalm County Jail, 3 years probation, and a credit for 23 days served. He also is court ordered to pay $4,476.50.

Court documents say Hatinger had a preliminary breath test result of 0.9%. The legal blood alcohol concentration limit for driving is 0.08%.
