GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — On Oct. 1, the Northview Public School District had to investigate an alleged threat made against Crossroads Middle School.
The threat against Crossroads is just one of many recent threats made against schools. On Thursday a 14-year-old was arrested for a threat against Forest Hills Northern High School.
The school said that while school was in session Tuesday afternoon, a parent called to alert the school about an alleged "threat of harm." In a letter to parents, the school said a student reported hearing a conversation of potential school violence.
The school said they immediately investigated the threat, as they treat all threats as credible until proven otherwise. They determined the threat was not credible, and took disciplinary action.
Now, the school says another incident occurred on Thursday involving the same student who made the initial threat on Tuesday.
Another student claimed on Thursday that the student who made the initial threat also had a "hit list," the student making the claim also was able to list off students whose names were on the alleged list.
The school said the claims upset many students, and once again they chose to take action and treat the threat as credible until proved otherwise.
The school contacted local law enforcement who investigated and interviewed both students. They said that no evidence of a hit list existing was found.
Going forward, the school is offering assistance to students through school counselors and social workers. They also held meetings with students in groups, to address the seriousness of the incidents and share the facts, address the surrounding rumors, the importance of reporting these incidents and also the serious consequences of making false threats.
