Judge sentences Wyoming woman to life without parole for murder of ex-boyfriend

"I just want to say sorry to my daughter," Sakina Muhammad said to the judge when asked if she wanted to say anything ahead of learning her sentence.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A jury recently convicted Sakina Muhammad of shooting and killing her ex-boyfriend Kwan Winston in 2022.

Her attorneys claimed it was an act of self-defense, but a Kent County jury convicted her of murder.

In court on Wednesday, the judge handed her a sentence of life without the possibility of parole in addition to a 24-month prison sentence for the felony firearm conviction.

Muhammad's attorneys said she does expect to appeal.

Muhammad said through her attorney while she accepts the jury's decision, she respectfully disagrees with their findings.

Investigators say Muhammad shot and killed Winston and then took off with their child.

While Muhammad claimed she shot Winston in self-defense, neighbors testified the two were in a toxic relationship and she was usually the aggressor.

"You deserve what you deserve. Karma has no expiration date. Nor does Karma discriminate. 674 days we've been living a with a hole in our hearts," Winston's mother said in court Wednesday.

The judge gave Muhammad a chance to speak in court.

"I just want to say sorry to my daughter," Muhammad said to the judge when asked if she wanted to say anything ahead of learning her sentence.
