GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Police are sharing an update on the condition of three children and four adults hurt during a Sunday rollover crash in Grand Haven Township.
Deputies said they responded to a crash on US-31 near Fillmore Street around 2:50 p.m.
Two cars were traveling southbound on US-31 when they began some type of "road rage" with aggressive driving, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says.
Deputies say a Cadillac sedan, driven by a 54-year-old man from West Olive, lost control and came to a stop in the center median. The man and his passenger, a 38-year-old West Olive woman, have minor injuries.
The other vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 29-year-old woman from Holland Township, also lost control. The Jeep rolled several times across the median before stopping in the northbound lanes of US-31, police say.
The woman and her passenger, a 30-year-old Holland Township man, suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital, officials said. But there were three children in the Jeep at the time of the crash who were all suffering serious injuries.
Deputies said a 9-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl were ejected from the car and suffered life-threatening injuries. The 9-year-old was taken to a local hospital by EMS and the 10-year-old was taken to a local hospital via Aero Med.
A 6-year-old girl suffered injuries as well, and was taken to a local hospital, deputies said.
One day later, police now say the 9-year-old girl has been released, the 6-year-old is expected to be OK and the 10-year-old remains in critical condition.
"It's not worth it, first of all, to drive aggressively like this and this is just one issue that we deal with on the roadways," said Ottawa County Sheriff Captain Jake Sparks. "Elevated speeds are one thing. You know, the weather was decent yesterday. You know, sunny out, right? The roads are clear. So people think that maybe the danger goes down and the speeds can go up a little bit and that's a concern."
Any witnesses who may have seen the vehicles before the crash or have additional information for investigators are asked to call Ottawa County Central Dispatch at 1-800-249-0911 or Silent Observer at 877-88-SILENT.
