KALAMAZOO, Mich — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) is recommending that drivers wash their cars if they drove through "standing, steaming" water on West Michigan Avenue yesterday.
About 500 gallons of waste discharged from a sewer manhole on the 5100 block of West Michigan Avenue Monday, Dec. 16 around 12:05 p.m., according to KDPS. They said that the release of the sewage was stopped around 12:45 p.m. The roadway was cleaned and sanitized the same day.
The county health department is advising that you get your car washed if you believe you may have driven through the sewage.
The Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services issued this advisory Tuesday:
"If you were driving near the 5100 block of West Michigan Avenue, and you experienced driving through standing, steaming water on the roadway between 12:05 pm – 12:45 pm, the Kalamazoo Health & Community Services Department recommends that you wash your vehicle. If contact with raw sewage is made avoid spreading and tracking; clean and disinfect shoes, clothes, and skin thoroughly."
This is the second time this month that the city has experienced sewage discharged from a manhole. On Friday, Dec. 6, KDPS alerted the public to 300 gallons of material that overflowed from a manhole on Bronson Boulevard.
