One person killed in Battle Creek shooting, gunman at large

Police are searching for a gunman in Battle Creek who killed a man at random.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Police in Battle Creek are searching for a suspect who shot and killed a man early Monday morning. 

According to a release from the Battle Creek Police Department, around 3:15 a.m. in the area of Poplar and Capital NE, officers were responding to reports of a shots fired at a truck. 

The driver of the truck hit the possible suspect and another person with the vehicle. The suspect in the incident was arrested and is getting medical treatment for serious injuries. The person with the suspect suffered just a minor leg injury.

The driver of the truck was not hurt. Police did not recover the firearm in this incident.

Moments later, police say a woman was walking her dog on Capital NE and got into an argument with a man who was headed in the direction of the first incident to see what happened.

Police say a second man, who did not know the man or woman arguing, pulled out a gun and shot the man multiple times. The 42-year-old Battle Creek man was pronounced dead at the hospital. 

Police deployed a K9 unit to find the shooter in the second incident, but the unit was unsuccessful. The gunman is still at large, but police say investigators have leads they are working. He was described as a "stocky," black man around 230-250 pounds wearing a grey-colored sweatshirt. The firearm he used hasn't been located either.
