GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The water main break that left about 200 people without water and some cars partially submerged has been fixed.
The City of Grand Rapids posted on their Facebook page Friday morning that those impacted by the issue now have their water back on. Those residents are under a boil water advisory until the city finishes the testing process to ensure there is no bacteria in the water.
The first water sample for testing was taken Friday. Another sample will be taken Saturday. If both samples come back clean, the boil water advisory will be lifted on Sunday, according to city officials.
To help residents under the advisory, city staff will be dropping off three cases of bottled water to each home.
The cause of the break is still unknown.
The water main break was initially reported around 3:15 a.m. Thursday. Crews worked to turn off the water for several hours. Officials noted that the age of the infrastructure added extra challenges to turning off the water and beginning repairs.
This caused major flooding in the area, which appears to have taken a bumper off a car parked on the street and partially submerged multiple vehicles. After the water was drained, sand and debris was left on the road and sidewalks. Cleanup efforts in the area are still underway.
The roads in the area are still closed. The city released a map of areas drivers are asked to avoid until further notice:
