GRPS investigation uncovers threat made to parent by head of school security

An internal memo sent to the GRPS Head of Security Larry Johnson details his violation of several policies and rules.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — An internal memo sent by the Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) District details misconduct of the district's head of security.

GRPS Chief of Staff & Executive Director of Public Safety & School Security Larry Johnson was put on paid administrative leave for three weeks following an investigation into his conduct during a call with a parent.

GRPS parent Seth Moore says a heated phone call with Johnson led to that paid leave.

“It's terrifying. We want to pull our kid from the district, we don't want to be a part of this anymore,” said Moore.

An investigation using a third-party investigator was launched by the district after the allegations of misconduct by the parent.

The investigators found that the allegations were substantiated and that Johnson told the parent:

  • [he was] going to "come after" [the parent]
  • [the parent] was lying and exaggerating
  • [the parent] was racist and privileged

The investigation found that Johnson had violated multiple Board Policies and rules.

The result of the investigation was mandating that Johnson complete a training program, review the rules and ethics, and respond to concerns professionally in the future.

Johnson has since returned to his position in the district after the administrative paid leave period ended. It is unknown if Johnson has since completed the training program laid out in the district's disciplinary response.
