KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A car that was involved in an exchange of gunfire earlier this week was found abandoned in Grand Rapids, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Office.
Tuesday afternoon, deputies said two cars exchanged gunfire near the intersection of 60th Street and Kalamazoo Avenue, about half a mile from East Kentwood High School. No one was injured, but at least one car was hit by the gunfire.
The two vehicles involved were a white Jeep Cherokee and a red Kia SUV, deputies say. The Kia and its owners were located Tuesday, but deputies were still searching for the Jeep.
It was found Thursday in Grand Rapids.
Kentwood Public Schools' superintendent said the shooting was not related to the district, but East Kentwood High School, the Freshman Campus and Pinewood Middle School all took safety precautions right before dismissal.
"At no time was there a direct threat to our buildings or our campus. Our priority is always the safety of our students, and so working together with law enforcement, we took steps to make sure that everyone remained secure inside buildings on the East Kentwood campus," said school leaders in a statement.
Deputies are still working to locate anyone who may have been involved with the shooting.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kent County Sheriff's Office at 616-632-6125 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
