Kalamazoo fire claims one life

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Officials in Kalamazoo are investigating a deadly fire that claimed the life of one person overnight Saturday.

It happened around 1:19 a.m. on S. Westnedge Ave. near McCourtie St. Officers say the fire started on the second floor of the home and spread into the attic.

A search and rescue team managed to get the occupant out, but they did not survive. The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

The victim's name is being withheld at this time pending notification of family. The Fire Marshal's are continuing to investigate what happened.
