KENT COUNTY, Mich — The Kent County Road Commission investigated a section of Alden Nash Avenue after two people were killed in a crash on Wednesday night.
42-year-old Anna Garza and 39-year-old Jessica Garza were killed after their Chevrolet Equinox hit a Buick Encore, driven by a 20-year-old woman from Greenville, head-on. Investigators believe that the Equinox crossed the center lane and hit the Encore.
Two children, ages 4 and 11, and a 36-year-old were also passengers in the Equinox and were injured. They are all in stable condition and recovering at the hospital. The 20-year-old was also taken to the hospital.
13 ON YOUR SIDE reached out to Managing Director of the Kent County Road Commission Jerry Byrne to ask about an investigation into the road conditions.
The road commission will investigate the scene of crashes to determine if the road can be improved to make it more safe.
"In this case, you know, there's a couple of fatalities, we feel bad, we look at it. Can we do something? We can't solve them all, but we looked to see if we could do something engineering wise, maintenance wise. In this case, we don't see anything yet. We will review the final police report when it's done. And we also talked to law enforcement, if they see something they talk to us. Right now, we're not seeing anything road wise that was causation to this accident," said Byrne.
Byrne also noted that the road carries over 10,000 cars a day and has a higher speed limit of 55 mph. But, when compared to other high volume two-lane roads, Alden Nash Avenue doesn't have a higher rate of crashes.
