Muskegon Co. mom hopes son's death will help stop gun violence in her community

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — A Muskegon County mother hopes her son’s death inspires others to put the gun down and stop gun violence.

On Tuesday, Kevin Wilson was sentenced to 24 to 80 years in prison for the death of Dylan Owens.

Owens was killed in December of 2021, after an argument between him and Wilson.

On the day Wilson was sentenced, Owens’ family came together at his grave to pray and remember his life

"Every day, you know, we think about him and talk about him. So, this is, this is not, you know, a different day. We celebrate a lot of events here with Dylan,” said his mother Jen Owens.

Jen Owens said her son was a hard worker. Owens left behind his mom, dad, siblings and a daughter who was not born yet.

Wilson plead no contest to second degree murder and a felony firearm charge back in April of this year.

During his sentencing, the judge weighed many factors including the fact that Wilson brought a gun to the fight between him and Owens and shot Owens instead of fighting him physically.

The family reacted positively when Wilson was sentenced.

Wilson did not speak during his sentencing.

Jen Owens said while she wants justice to be served, what she wants more is for people to put their guns down.

“There needs to be a message, you know, to just stop this. And if people have to think about maybe they had to give their life if they took a life, I feel that possibly these young people who are doing these things would take a second thought about it,” said Jen Owens.
