UPDATE | Boil water advisory still in place for Muskegon Heights, flushing begins

The city's Fire Chief, Christopher Dean, said residents may have cloudy or rusty water due to the flushing, but it's a normal part of the process.

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — As of Thursday afternoon, the City of Muskegon Heights is still under a boil water advisory

The advisory has been in place since Wednesday morning when a system failure caused a drop in water pressure.

Officials said the supervisory control and data acquisition system failed, causing the water pressure in the city's system to drop. When pressure drops in the water system, potentially harmful bacteria can be introduced to the water supply.

The city said Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system issues aren't related to any outside intrusion.

Muskegon Heights officials shared an update Wednesday evening that water pressure has been restored.

Hydrant flushing and water quality testing began Thursday morning.

The city's Fire Chief, Christopher Dean, said residents may have cloudy or rusty water due to the flushing, but it's a normal part of the process and not a cause for concern.

As the boil water advisory is still in place, residents are asked to boil their water for at least one minute and let it cool before drinking it or using it to cook, prepare food or brush their teeth. They do not need to boil their water to do laundry, wash their hands or bathe.

Dean said the first flushing samples are expected to be returned on Friday. In compliance with safe drinking water standards, the sampling will continue for the next few days.

Water distribution updates at the Muskegon Heights Farmers Market include a pickup on Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. and a pickup on Friday afternoon from 12 to 2 p.m. Both pickups will take place at designated locations.

Volunteers are still needed to help with loading and unloading water.
