Oceana County man pleads not guilty to making 'severe' cut on another man's neck

Logan Duvall, 24, is "well known" to local authorities, Sheriff Craig Mast said. His record proves it.

OCEANA COUNTY, Mich. — A man was arraigned for charges related to a stabbing in Oceana County early Monday morning.

Logan Nathaniel Duvall, 24, is "well known" to local authorities, Sheriff Craig Mast said. His record proves it.

Duvall is charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. These are felony charges. If convicted, Duvall could face life in prison.

He pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.

Duvall is also currently on parole for Larceny of Firearms and Larceny of Ammunition and on bond for Stealing a Motor Vehicle. The judge said he's suspected of stealing more vehicles in Muskegon County.

His record also shows a Breaking and Entering charge that he served over one year in prison for, as well as a probation sentence for Tampering with An Electronic Monitoring Device.

The charges he most recently appeared in court for stemmed from an incident around 2:30 a.m. Monday. A man showed up at the hospital in Shelby with a "severe" cut on his neck.

Mast said that the man told a story to hospital staff that they believed to be fabricated. When the man was questioned by deputies, he said he had been assaulted by an associate of his at his home in Downtown Shelby.

When the man told deputies the name of his assailant, they recognized it right away.

"We are familiar with the suspect," said Mast. "He was out on bond. He really should have been in jail. But he was released on bond for whatever reason."

Mast said he was told by hospital staff that if the victim's neck injury had been any worse, it could have killed him.

Due to law enforcement's prior "violent" experiences with Duvall, Mast said they called in the SWAT team from Mason County to help in surrounding the home, where Duvall lives with his mom.

"We called the suspect out, he came out a couple times," said Mast. "When he did, he was threatening."

Mast said Duvall kept coming out of the home with knives and retreating back inside.

"We gave him a little bit of encouragement," said Mast. "He did then come out of the house with two other gentlemen."

Duvall and one of the two other men were arrested around 8 a.m. Mast said nobody was injured besides the initial victim.

On Monday, Mast also said the prosecuting attorney plans on asking for a bond of $1 million in hopes of keeping the suspect in jail this time.

"There is very much due cause here for a high bond," said Mast at the time. "This individual is a dangerous person."

On Tuesday, the judge agreed. Duvall's team tried to argue for a lesser bond, but it was denied.

Several homes had to be evacuated during the standoff. Police said they did this to ensure the community's safety.

Sean Gilbert lives next door to Duvall's home. He said the standoff meant an early wakeup call for him and his family.

"It was about 6:30 or so, I know I went upstairs, woke up my wife and was like, 'hey, you know something's going on outside,'" Gilbert said. "I had heard them and saw the police cars, and they were calling something over the loudspeakers too, and so I knew it was further down. I didn't know it was next door."

"Then at about 6:45 or so, somebody came to our door and pounded on the door," Gilbert added. "He was like, 'Hey, how's your morning? Um, we're gonna ask you to leave.' And we were like, 'yeah, we'll find a place to go.'"

Gilbert opted to take his family away from the area during the standoff. Though the process was quick, he says he never felt in danger.

"The first one who, you know, banged on the door and said, 'Hey, how you doing?' And then the second police officer, who was just making sure, 'hey, are you guys ready to go?'" Gilbert said. "They were both really kind and great about making sure we were getting out the door and being safe."

Gilbert said though the process for him was smooth, he's not hoping for a repeat.

"Well, I hope it doesn't happen frequently. We're new to the area. Only been in Shelby six months," Gilbert said. "I don't really like judge our neighbors in that way or anything, right? So, I just, you know, they may have been caught up in something with old friends or something. I don't know."

Duvall's probable cause hearing is set for July 9.
