Nearly 200 Michigan Rite Aid supply chain workers out of jobs amid store closures

PONTIAC, Mich. — Rite Aid is closing its distribution center in Pontiac as it plans to close at least a dozen stores in Michigan in the coming months. 

The pharmacy chain's Pontiac distribution center will leave nearly 200 workers without a job when it closes for good on Aug. 16. 

A human resources representative for the supply chain sent the letter to Michigan's Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity - Workforce Development dated June 17. 

In the WARN Notice, the company indicated 191 workers will be laid off. 

Roles with the distribution center range from warehouse worker, driver, and forklift operator to other managers. The letter said the employees were told of their fate on June 17.

Some of these impacted workers are represented by the Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen & Helpers Union No. 614.

Despite numerous attempts for comment, Rite Aid has not returned calls and emails. 

Back in 2021, Rite Aid announced plans to close stores in the U.S. to save around $25 million a year following other pharmacy chains shuttering locations. 

Since then, the company closed more than 200 stores.
