Missing Wyoming man with Alzheimer's found lying in grass

Grandville Police got a call about a man lying in the grass near Wilson Avenue and Indian Mounds Drive. When they arrived, they realized that man was Mateo.

WYOMING, Mich. — Wyoming Police say they have found 67-year-old Patrick Mateo, who was last seen near 28th Street and De Hoop Avenue SW attending the 28th Street Metro Cruise on Saturday.

Grandville Police got a call about a man lying in the grass near Wilson Avenue and Indian Mounds Drive. When they arrived, they realized that man was Mateo.

He was sent to the hospital, where he is being treated, police say.

Prior to being found, there were sightings of Mateo near Chicago Drive and Clyde Park Avenue on Monday at approximately 3:45 p.m., but officers were unable to locate him.

Police say Mateo left the area of the Metro Cruise event on foot in an unknown direction.

"He's a very friendly person," said Mateo's oldest daughter, Liz Mateo Escribano before he was found. "He'll talk to pretty much anybody."

Liz says her father loves being around his large family and friends, and says with his condition that he still recognizes their names and faces.

"He's just funny. He's funny even with his Alzheimer's," Liz added. "He cracks us up. I call him and I'm laughing the whole time."

Liz and her family were worried that he has also not been able to eat properly, and has not been able to take his medication for his type 2 diabetes.

She says his family is thankful to everyone who has been searching and sharing information, along with asking for prayers as the search came to a close.

"We're going to hug him really hard," Liz said.
