Suspect in shooting death of 15-year-old girl denied bond, Chief calls shooting 'cowardly'

GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said Monday afternoon investigators believe 15-year-old Lakyi’jah Williams was not the intended target in the May 18 shooting.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It's been more than four months since the shooting death of 15-year-old Laki'jah Williams.

Investigators said she was shot and killed near Studio Park in Downtown Grand Rapids while riding a scooter.

Josiah Pittman, 18, is now charged with 2nd degree murder in her death.

"The idea that you're going to take a handgun and shooting an individual, you know, 10, 15, 20, however far away, extremely cowardly act number one for the act, but number two, you have no idea where those rounds are going to go," said Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom.

According to probable cause documents, Williams was with friends at the end of an alley near Cherry Street.

Pittman then allegedly pulled out a gun and fired four shots towards the group, hitting Williams in the back of the head. Pittman's description, according to the court documents, matched surveillance video from that night.

On Monday, Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said they don't believe shooting Williams was purposeful.

"Clearly she was not the target," said Becker. "Somebody else was, and unfortunately she was caught the crossfire."

According to her obituary, Williams lived life with a joyful spirit, loved playing basketball and football. She was a freshman when she died.

According to Becker, the shooting was a result of a disagreement between two people, but wouldn't go into details on what that disagreement was.

"It wasn't just somebody, you know, deciding to, you know, fire off some rounds because they wanted to just scare people or cause some sort of thing they're going after an individual," said Becker. "They didn't get that individual, got somebody else, so it wasn't random."
