The district is working with police as they investigate the threat.

THREE RIVERS, Mich. — Three Rivers Community Schools is closed Thursday after a threat was allegedly posted to social media.

In a statement on Facebook, the district said officials are taking this information seriously. The district is working with police as they investigate the threat.

Undersheriff Jason Bingaman of the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office said around 8:20 p.m. on Sept. 11, St. Joseph County Central Dispatch received several calls about a threat made towards Three Rivers Community Schools on Snapchat.

Officers with the Three Rivers Police Department began to investigate the threat.

Bingaman said during the investigation, the decision was made to close Three Rivers Schools on Sept. 12 out of an abundance of caution.

TRPD identified a juvenile suspect who lives outside city limits.

The suspect was brought to the sheriff's office by his mother and is fully cooperating with the investigation, Bingaman said.

According to Bingaman, there is no credible threat to Three Rivers Community Schools at this time.

Once the investigation is completed, a report will be forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office and Juvenile Court for a review of possible charges.

Deputies thanked the community members who came forward with the report of the threat, as well as TRPD and Three Rivers Community Schools for their quick response.

Deputies also wanted to take the opportunity to remind parents to speak with their children about the seriousness and consequences of making these kinds of threats.

This comes as a slew of other Michigan schools have investigated threats or rumors causing concern. Over the weekend, both East Kentwood and Byron Center Public Schools investigated rumors of a threat. Byron Center schools were closed on Monday out of an abundance of caution.

Newaygo Public Schools also investigated a reported threat this week that was determined to be unsubstantiated.

On the east side of the state, three South Lyon East High School students were charged this week after allegedly posting threats against the school on social media.
