MUSKEGON, Mich. — Wings Over Muskegon won't be held in 2025 due to a large-scale airfield construction project.

On Tuesday, the Muskegon County Airport received funding arrangements for an FAA-sponsored project to begin in spring 2025.

The project will span six months and cost $20 million.

The construction will include the complete removal of the existing 6,500’ taxiway alpha, its runway connectors and all existing lighting, navigational aids and underground utilities.

Once this is done, the taxiway and its systems will be reconstructed further southeast with all new infrastructure and connectors outside the high-energy areas near the center of runway 6/24.

The airport said taxiway alpha was built in the 1960s and is one of the oldest surfaces on the airport, warranting replacement.

The project will take place in several phases spanning throughout the spring, summer and fall.

The airport said construction will drive day-to-day changes that could affect ground traffic.

Routine-scheduled air service and general aviation operations won't be affected throughout the project.

The airport said it's important that aviators check local NOTAMs each time they fly to stay up to date on the current phase of construction.

When it comes to the air show, the airport said taxiway alpha is "especially critical" because it parallels the only active runway during times when show-related surfaces are closed.

Airport staff, the Michigan Flight Museum and other stakeholders decided not to host the show in 2025. However, they do plan for an expected return of Wings Over Muskegon in 2026.

The 2024 Wings Over Muskegon show will take place as planned starting on Friday, Aug. 9 at 5 p.m.

The Misty Blues will kick off the show with a flag drop, followed by a Twilight Show and live music.
