KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — The woman carrying a gun that accidentally discharged in a Kalamazoo County Costco works for Michigan State Police, according to officials.
On Sunday, the woman had been shopping at an Oshtemo Township Costco when a gun inside her purse went off. The woman was shot in the hand, deputies say.
Another shopper sustained an ankle injury and a third person fainted and was injured "during the chaos," according to deputies.
Lt. DuWayne Robinson with the Michigan State Police confirmed Tuesday that the woman, who legally owns the handgun, was an "enforcement member." She was off-duty at the time of the incident.
Robinson said MSP's Professional Standards Section will investigate the incident and issue a decision "related to any policy violations."
The woman was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for her injury.
