MICHIGAN, USA — Preparations are underway for former President Donald Trump's visit to West Michigan on Saturday.
The Grand Rapids campaign event comes exactly one week after the failed assassination attempt. And after the ordeal in Pennsylvania, criticism has plagued the Secret Service.
A West Michigan lawmaker is demanding Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle step down from her post.
U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, who serves Michigan's 4th congressional district, shared his thoughts Wednesday evening on social media.
"The 45th President of the United States was less than an inch away from being assassinated on her watch. I have no faith in her ability to lead the Secret Service given the absolute failure this past weekend," Rep. Huizenga said. "Her immediate resignation is only the beginning of what must happen."
Former Secret Service agent Jason Russell doesn't believe the Secret Service, including Cheatle, is running away from any of the responsibility for what happened.
He said it's important to keep in mind the last significant assassination attempt was on Ronald Regan more than 40 years ago, meaning the Secret Service has carried out thousands of successful operations.
"I think what you're going to see truthfully is the Secret Service is going to step up their game, not only here in Grand Rapids, but also across the country. And I wouldn't anticipate you're going to see any issues at any events anytime soon, probably in our lifetime," Russell said.
Russell adds that he believes it's unfortunate that this incident has damaged the reputation of a professional and qualified organization.
The Director of the Secret Service is now being subpoenaed by Congress to testify. A spokesperson for her office said she welcomes that opportunity.
Cheatle is expected to appear before Congress on Monday.
