MICHIGAN, USA — President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race for the White House on Sunday afternoon, ending his reelection bid.

Biden plans to serve out the remainder of his term in office.

Quickly after announcing his plans to drop out, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take on Former President Donald Trump in the election.

Following Biden's announcements, politicians and those close to him began releasing statements

Harris issued a statement that said she intends to "earn and win this nomination."

Former President Donald Trump said Biden was "not fit to run for President."

Many Michigan politicians also shared their thoughts.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer posted a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, where she said Biden was a "great public servant."

U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten (D), who represents much of West Michigan and is running for reelection, had said Biden should leave the race prior to his announcement.

On Sunday, she said she was grateful for his decision.

Michigan Senator Gary Peters (D) said on Sunday that Biden "put America first" by leaving the race.

U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin (D), who's based in Lansing said few public servants have given more to the country than Joe Biden.

U.S. Representative John Moolenaar (R), who represents all of Allegan and Van Buren counties, as well as portions of Ottawa, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Berrien counties, released a statement Sunday.

He said he's thankful Biden "finally realized he is unfit to serve another four years."

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D) from Michigan said Biden's decision was "another courageous action in his long history of service to our country."

She also said she endorses Harris for President of the United States.

"Without hesitation, I endorse Kamala Harris for President of the United States. She’s tough. She’s smart. And she’s ready," Stabenow said.

Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes thanked Biden and said he was always there for Michigan.

"Michigan Democrats will always be grateful for his vision of a country that sets aside its differences and finds hope in a brighter future, together," Barnes said.

MIGOP Chairman Pete Hoekstra released a statement that said Trump will win Michigan not because of Biden, but because of "the mess Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and the radical left's policies have made."
