WHITEHALL, Mich — From a young age, basketball was a passion for Whitehall senior Camden Fall Thompson.
It was only recently that Thompson equally fell in love with football.
"This past year, football just really been a bigger part of my life. I just couldn't see myself not playing both because I don't know which one I want to give up," said Thompson.
It's a decision he won't have to face for a while after committing to Western Michigan University for both football and basketball.
Ferris State and Grand Valley State also offered Thompson the opportunity to play both sports.
"They [Western Michigan] were recruiting me hard, especially football. This past four or five months, they've just been sending me a bunch of stuff. The wide receiver coach has been calling me all the time. And I just felt like I had that connection."
Thompson racked up 36 receptions, 706 yards and nine touchdowns this past season for the Vikings.
He is ranked as a three-star recruit and 51st-ranked player in Michigan, according to 247Sports.
On the court, Thompson became the all-time leading scorer in program history this past season. His campaign included leading Whitehall to a 22-0 regular season en-route to Associated Press Division Two All-State honors.
" You know, he's an elite teammate, elite son. He does everything that he does. He does it at elite level," said Christian Subdon, Whitehall Athletic Director and varsity boys basketball head coach. "It just speaks to his character and being able to divide his time."
According to scholarshipstats.com, three percent of high school athletes go on to play division one football. An even lower one percent play division one basketball.
Thompson will be doing both.
"I don't really know 100 percent how it's gonna be because college is a whole different level," Thompson said. "I'm just gonna do the best I can."
Thompson has been nursing an ankle injury but said he'll be good to get back to playing both sports next week.
With his collegiate future set, his attention has turned to winning a championship and achieving more than regular season success.
"It doesn't really matter what you do in the regular season if [it], doesn't transfer over in the playoffs," Thompson said. "We're gonna try to stay really disciplined and not slack up and finish the job hopefully this year in both sports."
