TOLEDO, Ohio — Oakridge High School alum Sophia Wiard dominated in her prep days in West Michigan.
The dominance certainly did not stop when she got to the next level.
On Tuesday, Wiard was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year by the MAC office. The fifth-year senior is putting up an average of 14.9 points per game. She also finished first in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.4. This is the third time Wiard has earned all-conference honors.
"I'm really thrilled for Sophia," Tricia Cullop told UTRockets.com. "I thought she earned it. Her leadership and the way she commands our offense earned her this. There are a lot of great players in our league so I think it's a testament to how others in the league feel about her play this season."
The Rockets star has made history while on her way to this huge honor.
This season, she became the program's all-time leader in games and minutes played at 152 and 4,746, respectively.
On top of that, Wiard became the first player in Toledo women's basketball history to record two games scoring more than 40 points.
Wiard also set the record for most points scored ever in a game for the school with 42.
She certainly knows how to put the ball in the hoop. She is Oakridge's all-time leading scorer in both girls and boys basketball.
The Rockets will match up with Western Michigan in the opening round of the MAC tournament in Cleveland. Tip is set for 11 a.m. in Cleveland.
