ANN ARBOR, Mich. — That's one way to celebrate a National Championship victory.
The Michigan Wolverines took down the Washington Huskies 34-13 Monday night, earning them their first national title since 1997. Celebration ensued across the country for Michigan fans — especially, it seems, in Ann Arbor.
The City of Ann Arbor Fire Department responded to 17 couch and debris fires in the area following the game. No one was injured, and no structures or vehicles were involved. Campus police told WXYZ that no arrests were made.
All the fires were reported in the South University, Hill and Washtenaw areas of the city, which surround the University.
Fans gathered from states away to celebrate the victory in the streets of Ann Arbor. The streets were closed while fans hugged and cheered for hours.
"This is insane, I've lived in this area my entire life and it's never been this way," said one resident to WXYZ. "I've been alive for 25 years and I've never seen something like this before. This year meant a lot to us, every year's been so disappointing and to finally get a taste of this? Oh my God, no one has it better than us."
A fan, who came from near Canton, Ohio, for the game, was also in Ann Arbor to watch the last win in 1997.
"This is once in a lifetime — or twice!" he laughed.
