East Kentwood names new head football coach

Tyrone A. Spencer II has been the head coach at Detroit Martin Luther King Jr./Senior High School since 2016. He's won four state championships in that role.

KENTWOOD, Mich. — East Kentwood High School has a new head football coach.

And he's got some state championship experience.

Tyrone A. Spencer II joins East Kentwood from Detroit Martin Luther King Jr., Senior High School. He's been the head coach there since 2016 and has won 4 state championship titles.

“I am beyond excited to lead the football program at East Kentwood High School,” Spencer said. “EKHS is known throughout the state for the school’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field. I’m ready to get to work and build on the strong foundation in place to relentlessly pursue excellence in all we do with the Falcon football program. I am also looking forward to becoming a part of the dynamic and supportive Kentwood community.”

He's ready to get started on the job.

“We are excited to have Coach Spencer join the Falcon family,” East Kentwood Co-Athletic Director Dave Emeott said. “His proven track record of success both on and off the field fit in with our vision of educational athletics at EKHS. We believe that he will not only help our football program continue to grow and thrive, but he will also be a great leader for the student athletes who will play for him over the next several years.”

He'll start in his new role after the new year.

Former head coach Tony Kimbrough retired after 10 seasons leading the team. He will continue to serve as a behavior specialist at East Kentwood High School.
