IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — Three people were killed in a three-car crash Saturday on I-96 east of M-66 in Ionia County, according to Michigan State Police.

Two Grand Rapids men and one man from Harbor Springs were killed. They were all in a Toyota Camry together.

Kevin Coulter, 29, was the backseat passenger and died on the scene. The driver, Andrew Piet, 28, died at a hospital in Lansing and the front seat passenger, Michael Cannon, 24, died at a hospital in Grand Rapids.

Three other people were also injured in the crash, but are expected to be OK.

The police are still investigating the cause of the crash, however, they say traffic was slowed and stopped in some places on I-96 eastbound due to another crash further ahead. A 34-year-old man was driving a Honda CR-V and failed to slow down during the traffic jam and hit the Camry, which then hit a Jeep Compass.

Speed and inattention to driving are believed to be factors in the crash, according to police.

All three men killed in the crash were professional Frisbee players on the way to a team practice in Detroit, according to the Associated Press.

They played for the American Ultimate Disc League team the Detroit Mechanix. The Associated Press said Piet's mother expressed gratitude at the outpouring of support from the Frisbee community.
