MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — Despite gusty winds, Halloween this year is bringing less tricks and more treats than what we saw just one year ago.
Trick-or-treaters this evening will deal with wind gusts exceeding 35 mph at times with the chance for an isolated lake effect shower or two near the lakeshore, but this is nothing compared to what many West Michiganders saw for Halloween 2023.
A white Halloween
Over 10 inches of snow was recorded in portions of Muskegon County on October 31st, 2023. The highest snowfall total was 11.5” reported in east Muskegon.
With such high totals, it was no surprise that multiple records were broken. The record for snowfall on October 31st in Muskegon was set at 8.8” last year which shattered the previous record of only a trace amount.
Last Halloween also set a new record for the highest single-day snowfall amount in Muskegon before November 15th in the last century. This date came in second place for the highest single-day amount on record, only beaten out by November 14th, 1908 when Muskegon saw 16.0” of snowfall.
With highs that day near 40 and lows in the mid to upper 20s, the snow that fell was heavy and wet, leaving tens of thousands without power and canceling trick-or-treating plans all across the area.
