WYOMING, Mich. — A man who was accused of being involved in a shooting at a Walmart in Wyoming on New Year's Eve last year has been sentenced.

Camrin Carpenter was initially facing a total of six charges, but had four of them dropped in exchange for a plea deal he made in May.

Carpenter was charged with three counts of carrying a concealed weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, firearm felony and a dangerous weapon charge.

As part of Carpenter's plea deal, all but the assault with a deadly weapon and one of the carrying a concealed weapon charges were dropped.

On Friday, he was sentenced to 23 to 60 months in the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) with credit for 231 days served for carrying a concealed weapon.

He was also sentenced to 17 to 48 months in MDOC with credit for 269 days, fines and costs for assault with a dangerous weapon.

The incident took place on Dec. 31, 2023, at the Walmart in Wyoming. Carpenter and another man, Latrell Young, allegedly got into a verbal altercation with a shopper at the checkout.

Police said that Carpenter showed the victim his gun before the victim ran from the two men.

Young and Carpenter allegedly chased the victim through the store and Young shot him several times at close range. Police said at least 10 rounds were fired.

That victim, who was shot, showed up to a hospital later for treatment. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The second victim, a woman who authorities said was not a target, was also struck.

At the time of the shooting, the store was full and was evacuated. The store closed for the night but reopened the next morning.

When this incident happened, Carpenter was on bond for a prior charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

In this separate case, he was sentenced to time served for 269 days in the Kent County Jail in addition to fines and costs for carrying a concealed weapon.
