KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A man who was arrested in connection to two different arson fires that happened in Kalamazoo in August is also being charged in connection to a burglary, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
On Thursday, KDPS arrested 24-year-old Toby Knight in connection to two separate fires in vacant homes on Aug. 28, as well as a burglary that happened later that morning.
KDPS said the arrest came after a joint investigation between Fire Marshal Scott Brooks and the Criminal Investigation Division.
Knight faces several charges, including arson, breaking and entering and theft of approximately $10,000 worth of property and goods.
The charges are:
- Arson of a Dwelling (First Degree Arson)
- Arson of Personal Property (Third Degree Arson)
- Breaking and Entering with Intent
- Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property - Motor Vehicle
- Fleeing and Eluding Police Officer - Third Degree
- Larceny in a Building
Knight is being held on a $200,000 cash/surety bond.
The first fire on Aug. 28 was reported at 1:36 a.m. in the 1700 block of Humphrey Street. KDPS said it was brought under control within 15 minutes.
The second fire was reported at 1:44 a.m. in the 1100 block of Sherwood Avenue and took about 45 minutes to put out.
In addition to this, KDPS said approximately $10,000 worth of tools were stolen in a burglary at a business in the 1300 block of King Highway the same morning.
This is the second arrest made this month in connection to arson fires in Kalamazoo.
On Sept. 5, a 32-year-old man was arrested in connection to multiple structure fires across Kalamazoo. He's facing multiple arson charges.
