GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — A locally viral pothole 13 ON YOUR SIDE first told you about Saturday has taken on a life of its own — and gotten attention from the city.
"I saw the black chair. It was really, really funny. It was just outrageous," Cory Denny said. "I posted in Grand Haven Informed, and the rest is history I guess."
Though the original recliner Denny found in the pothole is gone, the community has been quickly replacing it with different furniture.
"We've got speakers. Looks like a Charlie Brown Christmas tree, and we have some really nice cones that accentuate the chair in the pothole," said Ben Fahey.
He was one of the dozens of people 13 ON YOUR SIDE saw checking out the scene on Monday morning. Most of them were inspired to scope it out after the Facebook memes on the Grand Haven Informed page.
"My wife and I were very amused by all the people that were taking pictures there, and I kind of wanted to see exactly where it was," GJ Van Spronsen, another pothole visitor, said.
The memes have taken many different directions, and anyone you ask will likely have a different favorite.
“There was one gentleman that had his picture taken as if he was fishing in the pothole,” said Van Spronsen.
While many are having fun with the jokes, they agree there's truth behind it.
"I don't want someone's car to get broken. I don't want something bad to happen," said Denny.
No one seems to know how the first recliner got there — or who took it. The City of Grand Haven said they didn't remove the chair.
However, Denny said it is currently listed on Facebook marketplace.
"The original one is on Facebook marketplace for $1,000," Denny said. "I'm not getting it."
They agree the jokes will likely continue until something is done to fix it.
"Our infrastructure, road infrastructure really sinks, you know, with all these potholes," Fahey said. "At least we can do something about it. and kind of get people out here, and hopefully, you know, inspire the city to make some changes."
The Director of Public Works Derek Gajdos said this is on a private road, which means the property owner is responsible.
However, they plan to contact the property owners after the holiday to address road conditions because of the online attention.
