MUSKEGON, Mich. — Police in Muskegon are investigating after shots were fired in the city Monday afternoon.

A 13 ON YOUR SIDE crew saw police, crime scene tape and evidence markers just steps away from the Emmanuel Tabernacle Church at South Getty Street and East Holbrook Avenue in Muskegon just before 2:00 p.m. on Labor Day.

Police had cleared the scene as of 4 p.m. Monday. They have not yet shared any information about that scene. However, Muskegon Police confirmed a shots fired incident took place in the area of Laketon and Elwood.

Police did not say whether the two incidents were connected.

Police said a vehicle in the Laketon/Elwood area was struck by gunfire. All occupants of the vehicle, including a juvenile, had not been shot but had minor glass-related injuries.

We spoke to a neighbor near the church scene who said she was home with her family and was watching TV with her husband and children when they heard gunshots.

The woman said her husband and her told their kids to get down, but she said by the time they did, it was all over. In her words, she said it was "clearly a drive by."

The neighbor also said their street is primarily safe, but in recent years they've seen violence increasing. Both parents said they no longer feel safe in their own home.

The shots fired incident comes after two deadly shootings in Muskegon County over the Labor Day weekend.

On Sunday morning, 29-year-old Michael Stewart was shot and killed in the 3300 block of Hoyt Street in Muskegon Heights. He died at the scene.

Saturday night, Muskegon police say a 48-year old Muskegon Heights man was shot and killed during a dispute at a party in the 1600 block of Beidler Street in Muskegon. His name has not been released.

Anyone with information on Saturday's deadly shooting is asked to call the Muskegon Police Department at (231) 724-6750 or Silent Observer at (231) 722-7463.
