MUSKEGON, Mich. — Court documents filed against two men charged in the killing of a Muskegon man in October reveal a potential motive.
Robert Pompey Jr., 44, of Lakewood Club and Benjamin Fields, 36, of Muskegon Heights are each charged with open murder in the shooting death of 30-year-old Andres Garcia.
Garcia was found gunned down on Oct. 28 in the 1000 block of Sophia Street.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed against the pair, investigators found numerous 300 Blackout rounds at the scene of the crime.
Investigators looked at surveillance video nearby and learned two suspects working together, court documents said.
That video reportedly shows the shooting suspect wearing a two-toned puffy jacket with a ring on his right finger. Investigators said they found that jacket in Fields' sleeping area, and he was wearing a ring on his right finger when they arrested him.
During an interview with detectives, Fileds said Pompey picked him up that night and told him that someone had broken into his house and he needed help with something.
Fields reportedly told investigators, "he was supposed to help Pompey put fear into someone."
Fields said they were riding in Pompey's black Dodge Charger with white doors when pulled over, and Pompey handed him a rifle. Fields told investigators Pompey had a pistol that he put in his coat pocket.
As they approached the house, Fields said Pompey pointed out which house to approach. They walked up together before they split up, Fields said to detectives.
Fields said Pompey told him to shoot, so he did. Then they walked back to the Charger and drove off, Fields told detectives.
When authorities were serving a search warrant at Pompey's home, they said they found a disassembled AR-style rifle chambered in 300 Blackout inside a pillow in a car's trunk.
During a search, investigators said they found two pistols and a sweatshirt with a pattern that matched the clothing of one of the suspects.
Both men admitted to being with one another the night of the killing as well as being at the scene of the crime, detectives said.
